A recent national poll conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute found that Republicans are significantly more enthusiastic about the 2024 election rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump compared to Democrats and independent voters. The enthusiasm among all registered voters for this rematch has increased by 12 points over the past year, reaching 39%. However, most voters are not looking forward to the November election as highlighted by Institute director Patrick Murray. Sixty-three percent of Republicans expressed enthusiasm for the potential rematch, while only 36% of Democrats and 27% of independents shared that sentiment.

In terms of voters’ support for the potential candidates in the 2024 election, the poll showed a close contest between Biden and Trump, with 44% expressing support for Trump and 43% for Biden. However, 49% said they would definitely not vote for Biden, while 48% said the same for Trump. Additionally, 18% indicated they would consider voting for Democrat-turned-independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., though Murray noted that Kennedy’s support is not particularly strong even among voters who dislike both Biden and Trump.

The survey also shed light on the most important issues for voters in the presidential election, with inflation and economic growth/jobs topping the list at 38% and 37%, respectively. For Republicans, immigration (56%) and inflation (53%) were the top issues shaping their vote, while Democrats focused on abortion (44%). Murray highlighted that when partisan voters name their top issues, it is not about comparing candidate positions but rather about the issues that motivate them to vote. In this case, it appears that inflation is a key issue for a small group of voters who are still undecided.

The Monmouth University Poll was conducted from April 18-22, with 808 adults nationwide surveyed by telephone. The overall sampling error for the survey is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. Despite the divided enthusiasm and support among voters for the potential 2024 election rematch between Biden and Trump, the poll results suggest a close contest between the two candidates. While Kennedy’s candidacy may play a spoiler role in a tight race, his support is not particularly strong among voters, especially those who dislike both main candidates.

In conclusion, the survey data highlights the partisan divide in voter enthusiasm and support for the 2024 election rematch between Biden and Trump, with Republicans showing higher levels of excitement compared to Democrats and independents. Issues such as inflation, economic growth/jobs, immigration, and abortion are key factors shaping voters’ decisions in the upcoming election. While the poll indicates a close race between Biden and Trump, the potential spoiler role of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. remains uncertain, given his minimal support among voters. The upcoming election is expected to be a closely contested one, with inflation emerging as a key issue that may sway undecided voters.
