Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake expressed regret that Arizona’s century-old abortion ban was not being enforced by the state’s Democratic leadership, despite her recent public opposition to the law. Lake stated in an interview that while the Arizona Supreme Court upheld the ban, the current administration has chosen not to enforce it, leading it to be purely political theater. She expressed a desire for the law to be upheld, acknowledging that many wish it were being enforced.

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled in favor of a 160-year-old law that bans all abortions except in cases where it is necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life. However, the enforcement of the ban has been delayed for at least 14 days to allow for legal challenges. Arizona’s Democratic Attorney General, Kris Mayes, has stated that her office does not intend to prosecute providers or patients under the near-total ban. Lake’s recent comments have come under fire from the anti-abortion movement, as they contradict her previous support for the law during her gubernatorial campaign.

As a candidate for Senate, Lake has shifted her stance on the abortion law, coming out against the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling and calling for an immediate common-sense solution from the state’s Democratic governor and GOP-controlled Legislature. She has explicitly stated her support for exceptions in cases of rape and incest, lobbying state lawmakers to overturn the law. Despite acknowledging a shift in her stance on the issue, Lake maintains that she is still pro-life, although her comments have drawn criticism from anti-abortion advocates and conservative figures.

Lake’s opposition to the abortion ban has led to criticism from anti-abortion advocates and conservative commentators, who question her shift in position on the issue. Her stance has also been criticized by US Rep. Ruben Gallego, a Democratic candidate running unopposed in the primary, who accused Lake of flip-flopping on the issue for political gain. Gallego argued that she cannot be trusted due to her changing positions and alleged pandering to public opinion in pursuit of electoral victory.

Despite facing backlash from within the anti-abortion movement and political opponents, Lake remains the front-runner for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring Senator Kyrsten Sinema. The race in Arizona is crucial to determining control of the Senate, making Lake’s shifting stance on the abortion law a significant issue in the upcoming election. Ultimately, Lake’s remarks on the abortion ban reflect the complex and contentious nature of the issue within the political landscape of Arizona and the broader national conversation surrounding reproductive rights and women’s health.
