Thousands of Spanish journalists showed support for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez after he announced he was considering his future in office due to a court opening preliminary proceedings against his wife on corruption allegations. Sánchez blamed the investigation on attacks by the right and far-right opponents in the media and political parties. In response to this, journalists and writers signed an online manifesto denouncing the attacks on Sánchez’s wife as an attempt to undermine the will of the voters.

The manifesto criticized what it called a coordinated campaign of hoaxes, falsehoods, and harassment against members of the last two leftist coalition governments. It pointed fingers at right-wing parties, aligned media, businesses, and judiciary members for being behind these attacks. The legal complaint against Sánchez’s wife was filed by a far-right legal platform, Manos Limpias, which accused her of using her position to influence business deals. Spanish prosecutors have recommended that the complaint be thrown out.

The manifesto went on to call on civil society to join the protesters in opposing what they deemed an anti-democratic outrage. They stressed that governments should be chosen and changed through the electoral process and not through judicial or media interference. Despite Sánchez’s supporters planning a demonstration in Madrid to show support for him, the right-of-center opposition Popular Party criticized Sánchez’s reaction as a ploy to gain support in upcoming elections.

The situation has prompted a strong response from various groups in Spanish society, with journalists, writers, and supporters of Sánchez speaking out against what they see as unwarranted attacks on the Prime Minister and his wife. The allegations of corruption have brought about a wave of solidarity and calls for justice. Sánchez will announce his next steps on Monday, with many eagerly awaiting his decision.

The legal and political turmoil surrounding Sánchez has further polarized an already divided Spanish political landscape. Supporters of the Prime Minister are adamant in their defense of him, while opponents accuse him of using the situation for political gain. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen what impact these events will have on Sánchez’s political future and the wider political climate in Spain.

The involvement of the far-right legal platform, Manos Limpias, in the case against Sánchez’s wife raises questions about the motivations behind the allegations and the possible influences at play. The upcoming regional and European elections will likely be affected by the ongoing controversy, as parties across the political spectrum seek to capitalize on the situation. The fate of Sánchez and his government hangs in the balance as the country grapples with the fallout from these corruption allegations.
