Mike Johnson, a speaker from Louisiana, is urging President Biden to intervene in the reported plans of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Johnson believes that these warrants would be baseless and illegitimate, posing a threat to U.S. national security. He warns that if the ICC is not challenged, it could potentially issue arrest warrants against American political leaders, diplomats, and military personnel, undermining the country’s sovereign authority. Instead of targeting Israel, Johnson suggests that the ICC should focus on charging Iran and its terror proxies for engaging in war crimes.

The White House has been contacted for a response to these developments, but State Department deputy spokesman Vidant Patel did not confirm or deny the U.S.’s awareness of the ICC’s reported plans. He reiterated the U.S.’s belief that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over the situation in Palestine. Israel is concerned about potential arrest warrants stemming from its response to a terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. There have been accusations that Israel blocked humanitarian aid to Gaza during its military campaign in an effort to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, leading to increased international criticism of Israel’s actions.

While both the U.S. and Israel are not members of the ICC, the Palestinian territories were admitted in 2015. Netanyahu has vowed to not allow the ICC to undermine Israel’s right to self-defense. He views the threat of seizing Israeli soldiers and officials as outrageous and refuses to bow to it. Netanyahu warns that allowing the ICC to proceed with these arrest warrants could set a dangerous precedent that threatens all democracies fighting terrorism and aggression. He emphasizes that Israel will continue to defend itself against external threats.

The issue of ICC arrest warrants for Israeli officials comes at a time when tensions in the region are already high. Israel has faced criticism for its military response to attacks from Hamas, including accusations of excessive force and human rights violations. Johnson and Netanyahu both believe that targeting Israel in this manner is misguided and that the focus should be on holding Iran and its proxies accountable for war crimes. The U.S. government’s stance on the ICC’s jurisdiction over Palestine adds another layer of complexity to the situation, with concerns about potential threats to sovereignty and national security.

The ICC’s reported plans to issue arrest warrants have sparked debate and concern both in the U.S. and Israel. Johnson’s call for the Biden administration to take action to prevent this outcome reflects broader worries about the implications of such a decision. Netanyahu’s firm stance against allowing the ICC to undermine Israel’s right to self-defense underscores the importance of national sovereignty and the need to protect against external threats. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the U.S. and Israel will respond to these developments and how it might impact the broader geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
