House Republicans are facing significant infighting within their own party, with members actively campaigning against each other in primary races. Rep. Dan Bacon of Nebraska recently announced his support for his opponent after the House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good endorsed Bacon’s GOP rival. This type of campaigning against fellow party members has been frowned upon in the past but has become increasingly common in the current political climate. In Texas, South Carolina, and Virginia, similar intraparty feuds are taking place, further dividing the House GOP Conference.

Some House Republicans, like Rep. Dan Newhouse and Rep. Scott Perry, are facing challenges from the MAGA base due to their past actions, such as voting to impeach Donald Trump. In some cases, primary challengers are emerging against influential members like Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has been actively campaigning against his colleagues. Gaetz has responded defiantly, ready to face any challenges that come his way. These primary races highlight the larger debate within the GOP between members willing to make bipartisan deals and hardliners who oppose such compromises.

The primary races are crucial as they will shape the makeup of the next House Republican Conference and influence how the party pursues its agenda. Rep. Ralph Norman, a Freedom Caucus member, believes in supporting the most conservative candidates to run for office to address the country’s current issues. Unlike in the other races, Bacon’s primary race is considered a swing seat that could impact the balance of power in November. National groups are stepping in to support Bacon and his reelection campaign against his opponents, including those within his own party.

Critics of Bacon, such as Eric Underwood, the GOP chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party, have endorsed his opponents, citing concerns about Bacon’s voting record and representation of Nebraska Republicans. Underwood defended his decision to support Frei, arguing that it aligns with the party’s principles and values. Although some members like Good have declined to comment on their support for Bacon’s rival, national groups like the Republican Main Street Partnership are rallying behind Bacon and investing in his campaign.

Bacon has received over 100 endorsements and the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has endorsed him and campaigned on his behalf. Bacon has criticized his colleagues for undermining the norms of the House by stalling legislation and engaging in personal attacks on fellow Republicans. Despite the challenges he faces from within his own party, Bacon remains steadfast in defending his record and aligning himself with his party’s leadership. The outcome of these primary races will not only impact the makeup of the House Republican Conference but also influence the party’s direction moving forward.
