Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and others were indicted in Arizona for their role in advising Donald Trump during the 2020 election, along with fake electors who acted on Trump’s behalf. The indictment includes conspiracy, fraud, and forgery charges relating to attempts to change the election results. Trump was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the case. Arizona is the fourth swing state to bring an elections case involving the 2020 campaign, with Georgia being the only other state to go beyond fake electors. The state’s attorney general emphasized the importance of protecting American democracy.

Giuliani and Meadows were among the defendants whose names were redacted from the indictment but were easily identified. Other indicted individuals include Mike Roman, John Eastman, Jenna Ellis, and Christina Bobb. Donald Trump and his campaign are facing charges in multiple states, with some individuals, like Jenna Ellis, already pleading guilty. Some of those charged were former top Republican Party officials in Arizona. Despite adamantly insisting they were acting legally, multiple fake electors are now facing criminal charges for falsely declaring Trump as the winner in states he lost in 2020.

The indictment did not refer to Trump by name but rather as “Unindicted Coconspirator 1” and referenced attempts to declare Pence the winner of the 2020 election. Defenses from the accused individuals claim innocence and criticize the legal system’s weaponization. Partisan lawfare has been a growing concern, with defendants facing charges in multiple criminal cases. Fake electors claimed to represent legal voters, despite ultimately facing criminal charges for their actions. Some have expressed regret over their involvement in the scheme.

Boris Epshteyn, one of Trump’s top legal strategists, was also indicted, impacting Trump’s defense in other ongoing criminal trials. Epshteyn has faced legal issues in the past, including assault charges in 2014 and inappropriate touching accusations in 2021. Arizona election deniers have maintained dominance in the state’s Republican Party, with hard-right Trump supporters leading the party. Efforts to challenge election results and block certification of Biden’s victory were integral to keeping Trump in office after his 2020 loss.

Trump’s strategy of claiming election fraud has led to multiple legal challenges against him, including charges of election interference in Georgia and federal cases. Some of Trump’s allies and advisers have backtracked from his election fraud claims as they face criminal charges in various state investigations. Witnesses and key figures involved in the fake elector schemes have expressed regret and cooperated with prosecutors. The ongoing legal battles highlight the contentious aftermath of the 2020 election and efforts to defend American democracy against attacks on its integrity.
