In June 2022, five U.S. Marines, including Capt. John J. Sax, died in a military aircraft accident in California due to malfunctioning engines. In honor of his son, Stephen Sax established the Captain John J. Sax Family Foundation in 2023. John overcame several obstacles, including injuries and illness, to achieve his dream of becoming a Marine aviator, earning his “Wings of Gold” in 2020. The foundation’s mission is to support aspiring aviators facing similar challenges by providing grants and scholarships to help them achieve their goals.

To raise funds for the foundation, Sax collaborated with MLB to digitize a painting by sports artist Opie Otterstad titled “Babe and the Kids,” which depicts Babe Ruth surrounded by young children who are actually former MLB players, many of whom are Hall of Fame inductees. The painting was minted as an NFT on the blockchain, ensuring its permanence and exclusivity. The foundation has 200 NFTs available, with 150 for sale. Additionally, specific NFTs are designated for individuals such as Don Drysdale’s daughter and the Los Angeles Dodgers in honor of Jackie Robinson.

The digitized Otterstad art allows users to click on individual players, such as Nolan Ryan, and access highlights from their MLB careers. The piece took eight years to complete as Otterstad sought permission from courthouses and athletes’ families to accurately depict each player as a child. In some cases where childhood photographs were unavailable, Otterstad used family members who resembled the players in their youth. The NFT is viewed on various screens, from an Apple Watch to a large stadium jumbotron, without loss of quality, highlighting its value as a rare and exclusive digital asset.

The NFTs, priced at $15,000 or in cryptocurrency, grant purchasers decision-making rights and exclusive invitations to foundation events. Buyers become part of the team supporting aspiring aviators in achieving their dreams, with 75% of proceeds going directly to the cause. The NFT project aims to continue John J. Sax’s legacy and passion for flight by helping others overcome obstacles and pursue their love of aviation. The project represents a unique intersection of art, sports, and philanthropy, celebrating the achievements of MLB players while supporting future aviators in their aspirations.
