The husband of former Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon, Peter Murrell, was charged with embezzlement in a probe into the finances of Scotland’s pro-independence governing party. Scottish police have been investigating how 600,000 pounds earmarked for a Scottish independence campaign were spent. Murrell, Sturgeon, and Colin Beattie, the party’s former treasurer, were arrested and questioned last year in the probe but were released without being charged. Murrell’s first arrest came shortly after Sturgeon’s surprise announcement that she was resigning her post after eight years as party leader and first minister of Scotland’s semi-autonomous government. Sturgeon and Murrell have been married since 2010 and helped steer the SNP to a dominant position in Scottish politics.

Murrell stepped down from his position as the party’s former chief executive after his first arrest. This move came amid controversy about the party’s declining membership and a bitter fight to replace Sturgeon, who announced her resignation following Murrell’s arrest. Sturgeon insisted she had done nothing wrong and proclaimed her innocence after being released from custody in June. Despite Sturgeon’s announcement of resignation, she stated that she knew it was the right time for her, her party, and her country to make way for someone else. Sturgeon had led the party and Scotland since 2014, when Scots rejected independence in a referendum, but her biggest political goal of Scottish independence was unrealized.

Sturgeon had pushed for a new independence referendum following Britain’s departure from the European Union, arguing that the ground rules had changed. However, these efforts reached a stalemate when the U.K. government refused to authorize a new referendum. Sturgeon’s departure unleashed a tussle for the future of the SNP with recriminations over declining party membership and divisions over the best path toward independence. Opinion polls suggest that support for the party has sagged. The couple’s Glasgow home was searched by police over two days at the time of Murrell’s first arrest, leading to both Sturgeon and Murrell experiencing distress over the situation.

It is highly unusual for a leader or former leader of a U.K. political party to be arrested, making this situation particularly shocking for Sturgeon and Murrell. Sturgeon expressed her innocence and distress over the situation in a statement on social media. Despite their longtime involvement in steering the SNP to a dominant position in Scottish politics, Sturgeon and Murrell’s arrests and the subsequent fallout have cast a shadow over their political careers. The couple has been married for over a decade and have worked together closely to advance the goals of the SNP and the independence movement in Scotland. However, the investigation into the party’s finances and the charges against Murrell have put their political legacy in jeopardy.

The SNP currently holds a large majority of Scotland’s seats in the U.K. Parliament in London and leads the semi-autonomous Scottish government in Edinburgh. Sturgeon’s resignation has left a void in Scottish politics, with the party grappling with internal divisions and challenges in maintaining support for its goals of independence. The charged political atmosphere in Scotland following Murrell’s arrest has raised questions about the future of the SNP and the independence movement, as well as the personal and political repercussions for Sturgeon and Murrell. Despite their significant contributions to Scottish politics, the couple’s involvement in the financial probe has left their reputations in question and their political future uncertain.
