A.J. Smith, the winningest general manager in Los Angeles Chargers history, passed away at the age of 75 after battling prostate cancer for several years. Despite his tough and no-nonsense persona, Smith was known for his tremendous love for his family, the NFL, and the Chargers. He started his journey in the NFL as a part-time scout for the San Diego Chargers, eventually working his way up to become the general manager in 2003. During his tenure from 2003 to 2012, the Chargers won 98 games, marking one of the greatest chapters in franchise history.

One of Smith’s most infamous moves came in the 2004 NFL Draft when he selected Eli Manning first overall, despite Manning and his father, Archie, requesting that the Chargers not draft him. Smith orchestrated a trade with the New York Giants to acquire Philip Rivers while also collecting more draft picks. With those picks, he drafted star players like Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding. Rivers went on to become the best Chargers quarterback in team history, setting franchise records in yards and touchdowns. Smith also signed Antonio Gates as an undrafted free agent in 2003, who became the all-time franchise record holder in several categories.

Smith also made the decision to hire Norv Turner as the Chargers’ head coach in 2007, replacing Marty Schottenheimer. Despite Turner’s success with a 56-40 record, the team did not win any Super Bowls, leading to Spanos deciding to make a change in 2012. Both Turner and Smith were fired after the team went 7-9, marking just Smith’s second losing season as GM. Smith’s son, Kyle, followed in his father’s footsteps and is now the assistant GM for the Atlanta Falcons. Smith is survived by his wife, Susan, his daughter, Andrea, his son-in-law, Noah, and his three grandchildren.

Chargers owner and board chair Dean Spanos expressed his condolences to the Smith family during this difficult time, praising A.J. for his impact on the organization. Smith’s legacy includes building the franchise to its best years and making key decisions that shaped the team’s success. His dedication to the Chargers and his family, along with his relentless focus and intensity, elevated the organization during his tenure as general manager. The impact of Smith’s leadership and vision will always be remembered within the Chargers community and the NFL as a whole.

In addition to his successes on the field, Smith was also known for his strong relationships within the football community and his ability to bring out the best in those around him. His influence extended beyond the game, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him. As the Chargers mourn the loss of a legendary figure in their history, they will always remember A.J. Smith’s contributions to the organization and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
