One of Smith’s most infamous moves came in the 2004 NFL Draft when he selected Eli Manning first overall, despite Manning and his father, Archie, requesting that the Chargers not draft him. Smith orchestrated a trade with the New York Giants to acquire Philip Rivers while also collecting more draft picks. With those picks, he drafted star players like Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding. Rivers went on to become the best Chargers quarterback in team history, setting franchise records in yards and touchdowns. Smith also signed Antonio Gates as an undrafted free agent in 2003, who became the all-time franchise record holder in several categories.
Smith also made the decision to hire Norv Turner as the Chargers’ head coach in 2007, replacing Marty Schottenheimer.
