Kentucky angler Art Weston has returned to Texas in search of massive monsters, aiming to set another International Game and Fishing Association record. Alongside professional guide Captain Kirk Kirkland, Weston previously set the all-tackle world record by reeling in a 293-pound alligator gar on a six-pound line at Sam Rayburn Lake. Despite coming close on three occasions to catching another record-sized gar, the duo unexpectedly caught a 200-pound alligator snapping turtle. Taking precautions to safely remove the hook and release the turtle back into the lake, Weston and Kirkland navigated the challenge skillfully.

The rare and remarkable catch of the protected reptile was made even more challenging due to the reclusive nature of the species. With slow growth and rarity outside of zoos, encountering and successfully releasing a large alligator snapping turtle is a memorable achievement for the anglers. The turtle tracked Weston’s movements closely and was poised to strike if necessary, requiring careful handling to ensure both the angler and the reptile emerged unharmed. After a brief few minutes, the turtle was safely returned to the water, highlighting the skill and precision of Weston and Kirkland during the unexpected encounter.

Returning to Sam Rayburn Lake the following day, Weston and Kirkland continued their pursuit of record-breaking catches. After an hour-long battle, they successfully landed a 188-pound alligator gar on a four-pound line, breaking the previous record for a gar caught on the same line weight. Utilizing a sling as a cradle to weigh the gar on the shoreline, Weston and Kirkland made sure to record the catch accurately before releasing the gar back into the water. With the submission of a world-record application for their latest catch, the anglers showcase their dedication to the sport and their commitment to ethical fishing practices.

Weston recounted the intense battle with the alligator gar, emphasizing the quick actions taken to secure, weigh, and release the fish promptly to ensure its health and survival. With a keen understanding of the importance of conservation and preservation of species, the anglers prioritize the well-being of the creatures they encounter during their fishing expeditions. While aiming for record-breaking catches, Weston and Kirkland also demonstrate a deep respect for the environment and the wildlife that inhabits it, showcasing a harmonious balance between pursuit of sport and stewardship of nature.
