A cat that managed to escape a fire at a downtown Edmonton apartment is being hailed as a miracle survivor, showcasing the idea that some cats truly do have nine lives. The blaze occurred at the Hardwood Plaza apartment on Jasper Avenue and 110 Street, with the cat bravely jumping from a fifth-floor balcony as flames engulfed the building. Fortunately, firefighters were able to rescue both the man and the cat from the dangerous situation. Despite a few singed whiskers, the cat was found hiding under patio furniture above a donair shop and was taken to a rescue by the building’s property manager, Curtis Siracky. The feline was examined by a vet who initially diagnosed it with a broken leg and hernia, but fortunately, the injuries were swiftly resolved, and the cat is expected to make a full recovery.

Local cat lovers were touched by the cat’s story and went to the apartment building in the middle of the night to search for the injured feline after seeing a video of the dramatic rescue. The cat was eventually located under patio furniture and brought to the City of Edmonton’s Animal Care and Control shelter for further care. In addition to the cat, a man was also rescued from the fire and was taken to the hospital for treatment. A total of 42 people, including 36 adults and six children, were displaced due to the fire and were temporarily accommodated in a hotel by the City of Edmonton. Despite the rescue efforts, residents are still not allowed back into the building as the cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
