Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Joshua Eyer was honored with a procession and memorial in downtown Charlotte, after being one of four officers killed in the line of duty while serving a warrant for a felon in possession of a firearm at a residence in east Charlotte. Eyer, a husband and father to a one-year-old son, was remembered by his best friend of 15 years, Charlie Sardelli, as a selfless and caring individual who would do anything for those in need. Sardelli shared stories of Eyer’s kindness and generosity, highlighting his dedication to helping others and his unwavering support of his loved ones.

Eyer’s wife, Ashley Eyer, also spoke at the memorial service, describing her husband as her “very best friend” and expressing gratitude for the life they shared and the son they had together. She emphasized the importance of honoring Eyer’s legacy by teaching their son about his father and the impact he had on those around him. Hundreds of officers participated in the procession honoring Eyer, while hundreds of onlookers watched, showing their support for the fallen officer and his family. Memorial services for the other three officers killed in the shooting have yet to be announced.

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings provided details of the shooting during a press conference, stating that over 100 rounds were fired between the suspect and responding officers. The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., died at the scene after firing at officers from the second floor of his home. Two additional persons of interest were taken into custody, and authorities are still investigating whether there are any other suspects who can be charged in connection with the shooting. Hughes had an extensive criminal record and had spent time in jail, raising questions about the need for more stringent gun control measures.

President Biden visited Charlotte to meet the fallen officers’ families and members of CMPD, emphasizing the need to do more to protect law enforcement officers and combat gun violence. He called on leaders in Congress to take action to ban assault weapons, require safe storage of guns, pass universal background checks, and implement a national red flag law. The community came together to honor the fallen officers and show their support for their families, highlighting the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by those who serve and protect their communities. The tragic loss of four officers in the line of duty serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement personnel and the need for greater support and resources to ensure their safety.
