In 2024, Apple released four new iPad models simultaneously after a year without any new iPads. The new iPad Pro and iPad Air models were showcased in New York, where the author had a hands-on experience with them. Despite being aesthetically pleasing, high-end, and pricey, these new iPads are still not a replacement for a Mac according to the author. The iPad Pro, in particular, is considered superior in terms of hardware and could potentially serve as a Mac replacement in the future. However, it is important to note that iOS and MacOS are still distinct operating systems, and the transformation of iPads into Mac-like devices may not be Apple’s immediate goal.

The new iPads are targeted towards users who require advanced features for graphic arts, sketching, or photo/video work. While the entry-level iPad Air starts at $599 with 128GB of storage, the top-end iPad Pro starts at $1,299. In addition, the new Pencil Pro accessory is priced at $129, and the Magic Keyboard with a haptic trackpad costs $299 to $349, depending on the model. The Pencil Pro features haptic vibration and in-hand rotation capabilities, making it a useful tool for creative professionals. However, the new Pencil is only compatible with the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models, adding to the overall cost of ownership.

The iPad Pro boasts a thin and fancy design, with a stunning OLED display that offers enhanced brightness and color accuracy. The new iPad Pro models come equipped with M4 chips, which are specifically designed for thin devices and optimized for the upgraded OLED display. The M4 chip is expected to deliver improved performance and thermal efficiency compared to its predecessors. The Pro models also feature a new Magic Keyboard design with an aluminum interior, offering a thinner and lighter overall package, especially when paired with the iPad Pro.

The iPad Air models, priced at $599 for the 11-inch version and $799 for the 13-inch model, are considered more affordable alternatives to the iPad Pro. The Airs feature an M2 chip and do not include advanced features like Mini LED or ProMotion found in the Pro models. However, the Airs are still considered viable options for users looking for a middle-range FancyPad. The new Pencil Pro accessory is compatible with both iPad Pro and iPad Air models, providing users with additional creative functionalities. The Airs also feature a side Touch ID button instead of Face ID, which may appeal to some consumers.

All the new iPad models have their front cameras positioned at the landscape edge, allowing for better centering during video calls in keyboard-connected modes. Apple has also reduced the price of the 10th-gen iPad to $349, making it a more affordable option for consumers. The 256GB model is available for $499, providing expanded storage capacity at a reasonable price point. The 10th-gen iPad is considered a cost-effective choice for users who do not require the advanced features of the Pro models. Overall, the new iPad lineup offers a range of options for consumers with varying needs and budgets, catering to different preferences and requirements.
