Republican state representative Rep. Matt Maddock made a false claim on social media about “illegal invaders” arriving at Detroit Metro Airport. The photos he posted showed an Allegiant Air plane and three buses, with Maddock suggesting that these were carrying illegal immigrants. However, it was later confirmed that the buses were actually transporting men’s college basketball teams that had arrived for the NCAA tournament known as March Madness. The teams were traveling with their staff and were not illegal invaders as Maddock had claimed.

The Wayne County Airport Authority clarified that the buses seen in Maddock’s photos were transporting the basketball teams and their staff, not illegal immigrants. Gonzaga University’s assistant athletic director confirmed that their team had arrived on an Allegiant flight and boarded buses at the Detroit airport on the same evening as Maddock’s post. An Allegiant spokesperson further confirmed that the only Allegiant flight to the Detroit airport on Wednesday was the one carrying the Gonzaga team, as verified by a flight-tracking website.

Despite the factual evidence contradicting Maddock’s claim, he continued to insist on his false narrative. In response to social media users pointing out the mistake, Maddock dismissed them and refused to concede. He maintained his stance on Thursday morning, alleging that hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants are entering the country. Maddock criticized the media for not investigating these issues, suggesting that citizens should take up the task of investigating such matters.

Maddock’s unfounded claims coincide with a trend of false and misleading information regarding airplane flights and migrants gaining traction on the political right. The Michigan state representative’s refusal to acknowledge the truth despite evidence to the contrary raises concerns about the spread of misinformation and the potential consequences of such actions. Maddock’s persistence in promoting misinformation despite being proven wrong underscores the challenges of combating false narratives and the importance of fact-checking and accurate reporting in today’s media landscape.

The incident involving Maddock’s inaccurate claims highlights the need for responsible and evidence-based communication, particularly from elected officials who hold positions of influence. In an era marked by the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation, it is essential for individuals to critically evaluate information before sharing it, and for public figures to prioritize truth and accuracy in their public statements. By holding individuals like Maddock accountable for spreading false information, society can work towards fostering a culture of transparency, integrity, and trust in the dissemination of information.
