Millions of people are set to witness Monday’s total solar eclipse, with many planning to capture the event using their cellphones. However, concerns have been raised about the potential strain on cellular and Wi-Fi networks due to the surge in usage during the eclipse. Both network providers and public officials are preparing for the increased traffic that is expected as tourists flock to areas within the path of totality, where the moon will completely block the sun’s face.

Cellular networks themselves are not affected by the eclipse, but the influx of tourists will create conditions similar to crowded events like football games or concerts, making it challenging to maintain strong cell connections. The large crowds expected in cities and towns along the path of totality will lead to a significant increase in cellphone usage as people use social media, livestreams, and video calls to document and share their experiences of the eclipse.

Providers like AT&T are anticipating a boost in network traffic during the eclipse as people use their devices to capture and share content. In 2017, during the last total solar eclipse, AT&T reported usage spikes of up to 15% around certain cell towers within the path of totality. However, the company insists it is prepared for Monday’s event and expects no direct operational impact on the wireless network during the eclipse.

Other major providers such as Verizon and T-Mobile also express confidence in their network infrastructure ahead of Monday’s eclipse. Verizon has invested in expanding its US infrastructure across the eclipse path, with the activation of new cell sites in locations like New York and Ohio. T-Mobile is deploying extra temporary cell sites to handle the expected increase in tourist traffic, ensuring that additional capacity has been added to accommodate data usage.

Local governments and wireless providers have been coordinating for over a year to prepare for the eclipse, especially in places that have not experienced a total eclipse in a long time like New York. However, officials are anticipating large crowds in areas like Buffalo and Rochester in New York, which may lead to standard disruptions in service due to limited coverage in places with large gatherings. Planning ahead and expecting limited coverage in these areas is recommended for visitors and locals alike.

While some cities may experience disruptions to cell service due to the increase in visitors, having offline maps and directions downloaded beforehand can help mitigate any issues. The focus should be on enjoying the profound experience of a total solar eclipse, which provides a unique connection to nature, the universe, and the celestial bodies of the sun and moon. Despite potential network disruptions, the shared experience of witnessing an eclipse is something to be cherished and savored by all who are fortunate enough to witness it.
