A Jewish student at Columbia University in New York City filed a class action lawsuit against the institution on the grounds that it failed to provide a safe environment for its students. The student, identified as C.S., is seeking an emergency injunction to enforce the Statement of Ethical Conduct and Administrative Code of Conduct to provide a safe and secure learning environment free from harassment and discrimination. The lawsuit acknowledges the importance of free debate on college campuses, but states that when events turn violent and hostile, genuine debate becomes impossible. The student claims that debates surrounding Israel have become exceedingly contentious, with anti-Israel activists engaging in violent and intimidating behavior towards Jewish students and faculty.

The lawsuit describes incidents where Jewish students were harassed, physically assaulted, and verbally abused by anti-Israel protesters on campus. Protesters established an “encampment” called the “Liberated Zone” where Jewish students were allegedly blocked from walking through, subjected to harassment, and targeted with hate speech. University officials called for the encampment to be removed, but protesters refused and the situation escalated. Massive banners and signs displayed anti-Semitic slogans and messages in support of Hamas, further exacerbating the hostile environment for Jewish students. The student claims that Columbia University failed to take appropriate action to address the behavior of the protesters and protect its Jewish students.

The lawsuit highlights the impact of the encampment on the education of Jewish students, who were forced to attend classes remotely while non-Jewish students continued to attend in person. The student argues that this segregation of Jewish students creates a two-tiered educational experience and contributes to a dangerous environment that could result in further acts of violence and discrimination. The student alleges that the university’s decision to switch to a hybrid learning model did not address the safety concerns on campus and only exacerbated the situation for Jewish students. The plaintiff claims that her education was negatively impacted when she could not turn in part of her final exam project due to safety concerns.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik initially took a firm stance against the protesters, but later announced that the university was negotiating with them, further frustrating the situation for the Jewish student. The lawsuit seeks injunctive and equitable relief, compensatory and punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, and other litigation expenses. The student hopes to hold the university accountable for failing to provide a safe educational environment for its students and to address the ongoing harassment and discrimination faced by Jewish students on campus. Columbia University declined to comment on the lawsuit, which continues to highlight the challenges faced by Jewish students in academic environments where debates and protests become hostile and violent.
