For Resort 2022, Chanel showcased their collection at the Carrières de Lumières in Les Baux, in Provence, France. The theme for the collection was inspired by the hauntingly beautiful movie “The Testament of Orpheus” directed by Jean Cocteau in 1960. Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, found inspiration in the modern and fresh setting of the quarries, where the movie was filmed, featuring Cocteau alongside other cultural icons such as Pablo Picasso and Yul Brynner. Viard envisioned strong, black and white clothes that reflect the essence of the movie and the unique location, drawing parallels to Petra or Egypt.

Pre-Fall 2021 collection was showcased at the 16th-century Chenonceau in Touraine, France, known as the Chateau des Femmes, due to its association with powerful women throughout history. Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, drew inspiration from the chateau’s history, particularly the influence of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici. Viard aimed to create a collection that was “princess-y” with elements such as ruffled collars inspired by Catherine de Medici and other details reminiscent of the 16th century. Viard was fascinated to discover that Catherine de Medici’s symbol, a linked double C, was similar to Chanel’s iconic logo, symbolizing the brand’s heritage.

The Resort 2021 collection was originally planned to be showcased in Capri but was shown in Paris due to the pandemic. Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, sought to evoke a “Balade en Méditerranée” or A Mediterranean Jaunt, through the collection. Viard collaborated with photographer Karim Sadli and model Mica Argañaraz to create the illusion of a Caprese sunset in Chanel’s Paris photo studio. Viard envisioned a destination wardrobe of “easy clothes” that a sophisticated yet cool girl would want to travel with, inspired by the idea of summer in Capri or the South of France.

Chanel’s Resort collections under Virginie Viard’s direction have showcased a blend of historical inspiration and modernity, paying homage to cultural icons and iconic locations. The use of unique settings such as the Carrières de Lumières and the Chateau des Femmes adds depth and context to the collections, infusing them with a sense of heritage and storytelling. Viard’s attention to detail and ability to draw inspiration from various sources, from movies to historical figures, result in collections that are both sophisticated and relevant to contemporary fashion trends.

Each collection presented by Chanel under Virginie Viard’s direction has a distinct theme and narrative, drawing inspiration from both historical references and modern influences. From the romanticism of the 16th century at Chenonceau to the cinematic beauty of Jean Cocteau’s films at the Carrières de Lumières, Viard’s creative vision shines through in each collection. With a focus on creating clothing for the modern woman, Viard combines elements of femininity, strength, and elegance, resulting in collections that are both timeless and relevant to the current fashion landscape.

Overall, Chanel’s Resort collections under Virginie Viard’s direction reflect a harmonious blend of heritage and innovation, weaving together elements of history, culture, and modernity. By showcasing collections in unique locations such as chateaus and quarries and drawing inspiration from iconic figures and movies, Viard creates a rich tapestry of storytelling through fashion. With each collection, Viard continues to push the boundaries of creativity while staying true to Chanel’s legacy of elegance and sophistication, creating garments that are not only beautiful but also imbued with a sense of narrative and meaning.
