The theme for the collection was inspired by the hauntingly beautiful movie “The Testament of Orpheus” directed by Jean Cocteau in 1960. Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, found inspiration in the modern and fresh setting of the quarries, where the movie was filmed, featuring Cocteau alongside other cultural icons such as Pablo Picasso and Yul Brynner. Viard envisioned strong, black and white clothes that reflect the essence of the movie and the unique location, drawing parallels to Petra or Egypt.
Pre-Fall 2021 collection was showcased at the 16th-century Chenonceau in Touraine, France, known as the Chateau des Femmes, due to its association with powerful women throughout history. Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, drew inspiration from the chateau’s history, particularly the influence of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici.
