A cargo ship that was trapped in Baltimore’s harbor for weeks following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge was finally freed by passing through a new deep-water channel. The Balsa 94, a bulk carrier headed for Saint John, Canada, was guided by tug boats through the temporary 35-foot-deep channel, marking a milestone in the port city’s recovery. Two more commercial ships also crossed through the channel later in the day.

The bridge collapse occurred after a container ship lost power and collided with it on March 26, causing it to crumble and killing six construction workers. Baltimore officials are working to clear the mangled steel from the harbor entrance where the Dali, the cargo ship that caused the wreck, is still stuck. Five other vessels trapped in the harbor are expected to leave through the new channel before it is closed next week.

Crews will work to remove the steel spans that crashed onto the Dali’s deck, allowing it to refloat and be guided back into the port. The main 50-foot-deep channel is set to reopen after the cargo ship is moved, restoring maritime traffic to the busy port that normally handles a significant amount of cars and farming equipment. The reopening of the main channel is expected to have a positive impact on Baltimore’s economy and the jobs of longshoremen, truckers, and small business owners.

The collapse of the bridge resulted in the deaths of six Latin American immigrants who were part of a roadwork crew on break when the cargo ship rammed into it. Only four bodies have been recovered from the debris underwater. The tragedy not only had a human cost but also affected the local economy in Baltimore. The reopening of the main channel is anticipated to help alleviate some of the economic impacts and bring relief to those who rely on maritime traffic for their livelihoods.

Efforts to free the Dali and reopen the main channel will continue through May 10, with the expectation that the maritime traffic will be fully restored next month. The closure of the channel and the subsequent reopening mark important steps in the recovery and restoration of normal operations in Baltimore’s port. The progress made in clearing the wreckage and allowing ships to pass through the new channel is a significant achievement in the aftermath of the bridge collapse.
