Gen Z, considered those born between 1996 and 2012, are digital natives who have quickly embraced AI technology for various purposes, including job application processes. However, according to Gen Z career expert Shoshana Davis, they have become overly reliant on AI tools like ChatGPT to generate cover letters and job application answers. This has led to issues where employers receive hundreds of identical responses, raising suspicions of ChatGPT use. While 45% of job seekers have used AI to enhance their resumes, Gen Z appears to be leaning the most on AI compared to other generations, with 61% stating they can’t imagine work tasks without generative AI.

Copying responses from ChatGPT can be detrimental to a job applicant’s chances of success, as highlighted by a Resume Genius survey where over half of hiring managers expressed dislike for AI-generated resumes. One of the reasons why this method is ineffective is that ChatGPT may not always provide accurate information, with limitations such as outdated data and potential bias. Davis shared a story of an employer receiving 100 identical responses about a fitness-related product launch, which turned out to be from ChatGPT and referenced an ad campaign from several years prior.

It is important for young people to educate themselves on the appropriate use of AI tools like ChatGPT and not simply copy answers. While AI can assist in the job application process by helping with interview preparation and research, it should be viewed as a tool and not a replacement for human input. Michelle Reisdorf from recruitment firm Robert Half also emphasized the need for AI to be used for proofreading and enhancing existing content rather than as a sole means of generating a resume. Recruiters can detect if an applicant is not including specific details from past experiences or writing in a genuine, human voice.

Davis acknowledged that she uses ChatGPT to aid in structuring documents, brainstorming ideas, and drafting content. However, she emphasized the importance of not simply copying and pasting responses generated by AI. By utilizing AI as a supplementary tool in the job search process, individuals can benefit from its assistance while maintaining the authenticity and relevance of their application materials. Ultimately, the key is to strike a balance between leveraging technology and ensuring that personal input and creativity shine through in job applications and interactions with potential employers.
