US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has voiced concerns about Chinese attempts to influence and interfere with the upcoming US elections, despite a previous commitment from Chinese leader Xi Jinping not to do so. Blinken discussed this during an interview with CNN’s Kylie Atwood after a three-day trip to China where he met with top Chinese officials, including Xi. He emphasized the need to cut off any interference quickly, as it is unacceptable to the US. Blinken also expressed concerns about China and other countries exploiting existing social divisions in the US for influence campaigns.

While China has repeatedly stated that it does not interfere in US elections due to its principle of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs, Blinken reiterated the US’s stance against any interference. He raised the issue during his meeting with Chinese officials and warned of further action if China continues to support Russia’s defense industry. The US believes that Chinese support is aiding Russia in producing tanks, munitions, and armored vehicles for its operations in Ukraine. Blinken stated that if China does not stop its support, the US will take more action, and other countries may follow suit.

Beijing has refuted US accusations of interference in the war in Ukraine, characterizing its trade with Russia as normal economic exchanges. China maintains that it remains neutral in the conflict and continues to position itself as a potential mediator for peace, while strengthening its ties with Russia. Blinken highlighted that the US has concerns regarding China’s support for Russia and expects China to act accordingly. He did not provide a timeline for potential further action but emphasized the need for China to stop enabling Russia’s military activities in Ukraine.

In response to questions about pro-Palestinian protests at US college campuses and reports of antisemitic rhetoric during these gatherings, Blinken defended the right to protest and freedom of expression. While acknowledging instances of clear expressions of antisemitism, he stated that protests themselves are not inherently antisemitic. Blinken emphasized the importance of allowing people to express their opinions and emotions, particularly in democracies where such freedoms are protected. He did not explicitly mention the lack of these freedoms in China, highlighting the contrast between the US and Chinese approaches to free expression.

The situation regarding Chinese interference in US elections and support for Russia’s defense industry remains unresolved, with Blinken warning of potential further action if China continues its current course of action. The US remains vigilant against foreign influence campaigns and interference in its electoral processes. Blinken’s discussions with Chinese officials underscore the ongoing tensions between the two countries over various issues, highlighting the challenges in their bilateral relations. The US continues to advocate for democratic principles and freedoms while engaging with China on critical matters of mutual concern.
