President Joe Biden delivered a speech condemning antisemitism, denouncing hate against Jews, and affirming Jewish Americans’ place in the country amidst a surge in antisemitism. Despite the turmoil in the Middle East with Israel’s assault on Gaza, Biden did not send any cautionary messages to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and refrained from criticising Israel’s actions. He stressed his unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and right to exist as an independent Jewish state, regardless of disagreements.

Biden faced criticism from progressive Democrats and Arab Americans for his support of Israel’s response to Hamas attacks, with concerns that this could fracture his coalition ahead of the upcoming election. He also encountered protesters at campaign events chanting “Genocide Joe” but made no clear reference to the suffering of Gazans. Biden emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and the rule of law while addressing antisemitism on college campuses.

The speech marked a shift in addressing a controversial debate and controlling the narrative in a politically sensitive moment, aiming to reset the discussion around antisemitism and the Holocaust. Biden’s remarks contrasted sharply with his predecessor, Donald Trump, who was embroiled in legal proceedings at the time. Despite criticism, Biden’s stance aligned with many Israelis in condemning the Hamas terror attacks in October and emphasizing the need to remember and educate about the Holocaust.

While Biden’s speech may have irked progressives, it potentially provided cover on his right flank by portraying campus protests as left-wing extremism that threatens order and security. Republican reactions to the speech, including drawing analogies to Nazi Germany, reflected partisan divisions in how history and politics are framed for political gain. Understanding and preventing the manipulation of history was a key focus of Biden’s address on the anniversary of VE Day.

The speech highlighted the complexity of addressing multiple audiences while navigating political sensitivities around Israel, the Holocaust, and free speech on college campuses. Biden’s unapologetic condemnation of antisemitism and emphasis on the truth of historical events aimed to counter false narratives and prevent historical manipulation for political gain. His commitment to upholding American values and principles, while acknowledging the political challenges of the moment, set the tone for future engagements on these critical issues.
