Myrtle, an ancient green sea turtle at the New England Aquarium in Boston, underwent a physical examination to ensure she was in good health. At an estimated 95 years old, Myrtle is at the upper boundaries of her species’ longevity, but she was found to be in robust condition. Despite her age, there is every reason to believe Myrtle will continue to thrive for years to come. She has become an iconic figure at the aquarium, with generations of visitors recognizing her as a beloved resident.

Performing a physical exam on Myrtle is no small task and occurs about twice per year. Divers assist in getting her into an underwater crate, where a team of veterinarians and aquarists check her health. This includes drawing blood, checking her flippers for range of motion, and ensuring her eyes, mouth, and nose are in good working order. Myrtle also receives an ultrasound and has her weight taken before returning to the ocean tank where she resides. Despite the challenges, the examination went smoothly, and Myrtle was back in her home by late morning.

Myrtle has become a star attraction at the New England Aquarium, with over 50 million visitors having had the chance to see her over the past five decades. She arrived at the aquarium in 1970 from another facility and has since become accustomed to human interaction. According to the aquarium’s website, Myrtle’s favorite activity is having her shell scratched, showcasing her unique bond with visitors. The green sea turtle shares her space with two loggerhead sea turtles named Carolina and Retread, who are younger and smaller than her but also received check-ups on the same day.

Green sea turtles, like Myrtle, are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and are declining in population. They are the second-largest species of sea turtle and inhabit tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. Through the care and attention provided by the aquarium staff, Myrtle has become a symbol of hope for her species, demonstrating that with proper conservation efforts, these magnificent creatures can continue to thrive. The successful health examination of both Myrtle and her fellow sea turtles is a testament to the dedication of the aquarium in preserving these important marine animals for future generations.

Myrtle’s multigenerational impact on visitors is a testament to her enduring popularity and significance at the aquarium. Parents who once saw Myrtle as children now bring their own kids to see the beloved sea turtle, creating a special bond that spans across time. The affection and admiration for Myrtle speak to the power of connecting with nature and the importance of wildlife conservation. As an ambassador for her species, Myrtle represents the beauty and resilience of sea turtles, inspiring others to take action to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats. With continued care and conservation efforts, Myrtle and her companions will hopefully continue to delight and educate visitors for years to come.
