Amazon Prime Video has acquired the rights to the classic science fiction show Battlestar Galactica, which was previously taken off the service due to licensing issues. The show, which originally aired in 2003 and ran for four seasons, is now back on Prime Video, including the miniseries that sets the stage for the series. Despite being over 20 years old, Battlestar Galactica still holds up as one of the best sci-fi shows in TV history.

The original series of Battlestar Galactica consisted of two long parts for the miniseries, 13 episodes for season 1, and 20-21 episodes for seasons 2-3. This is in contrast to the current trend of shorter seasons for TV shows. Additionally, there is a post-show movie called The Plan that provides additional context to the series and is also available for streaming on Prime Video. Ronald D. Moore, one of the creators of the series, is still making waves in the sci-fi space with his current show For All Mankind, which has been renewed for a fifth season.

A reboot of Battlestar Galactica is also in the works, set to bring the IP back for a third time with The Sinner creator Derek Simonds as the showrunner and Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail as the producer. This new iteration of the show is expected to air on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, although there is no set release date yet. The project has been in development since 2019, with the latest update in January 2024.

Fans of science fiction can now enjoy the original Battlestar Galactica series on Prime Video while they await the new reboot. The show is lauded for its compelling storytelling and characters, making it a must-watch for any sci-fi enthusiast. Despite being two decades old, Battlestar Galactica remains a standout in the genre. Viewers can immerse themselves in the world of Cylons and humans as they navigate the challenges of survival and conflict in space.

As viewers dive back into the world of Battlestar Galactica, they can also explore other works by Ronald D. Moore, such as the acclaimed For All Mankind series. Moore continues to make his mark in the sci-fi genre, creating engaging and thought-provoking content for audiences. With the return of Battlestar Galactica and the promise of a new reboot on the horizon, fans of the series have much to look forward to in the coming years. Stay tuned for updates on the latest developments in the Battlestar Galactica universe.
