Awardco CEO Steve has found himself navigating the challenging issue of workplace flexibility in the wake of the pandemic. While many employees now prefer the option to work remotely and maintain a healthy work-life balance, a large number of companies are planning to implement return-to-office policies by the end of 2024. This conflicting situation has put many organizations in a tough spot, trying to find a balance that satisfies both their employees and leadership teams.

Through trial and error, they have managed to strike a healthy balance between in-office expectations and a flexible policy. Recognizing that no strategy will please everyone, Steve shares three things they have done to make finding the right balance easier.

One key strategy they have implemented is making the office a place people want to be. This includes creating quiet areas for focus, providing opportunities for exercise, upgrading office equipment for comfort, offering food and snacks, encouraging team activities, and planning companywide celebrations. By making the office environment enjoyable and accommodating, employees may be more willing to spend their days there again.

Setting clear expectations but also leaving room for exceptions is another effective strategy employed by Awardco. While the expectation is for employees to be in the office if able, managers are instructed to support them if they are unable to make it in for legitimate reasons. This approach builds trust and flexibility, allowing employees to work from home when necessary without micromanagement or the need for proof.

To further clarify the balance between in-office collaboration and flexibility, Awardco suggests scheduling required in-office time. By setting specific times that everyone must be in the office and allowing for flexibility on other days, they encourage collaboration while still accommodating employee preferences. This approach ensures that everyone works together during set times, promoting teamwork without completely eliminating the option for remote work.

Finding the right balance between productivity, burnout, collaboration, and work-life balance can be a challenge for businesses. However, Steve emphasizes the importance of creating a workplace where employees feel encouraged, empowered, and listened to. By implementing strategies like making the office desirable, setting clear expectations, and scheduling required in-office time, organizations can work towards finding a balance that satisfies both their employees and leadership teams.
