In 2019, Amazon launched its own proprietary AI model, the Package Decision Engine, to reduce packaging waste as the company ships 20 million packages a day across 19 countries. This AI model helps predict the most efficient packaging choice for each item, ensuring that resources are used effectively and sustainably. Using natural language processing and text-based data from its online store, as well as feedback from returns and product reviews, the model can make informed decisions about packaging. By analyzing photos taken when items arrive at Amazon warehouses, the model can accurately determine the best way to pack each item.

The AI model has been successful in reducing packaging waste, saving at least 500,000 tons of packaging per year – equivalent to the weight of 7,750 Boeing 737 airplanes. Amazon researchers Prasanth Meiyappan and Matthew Bales found that combining data from both visuals and text improved the model’s performance by up to 30%. Using AI to make packaging decisions is a unique approach, as Amazon has access to a vast amount of data that other companies may not have. The company currently uses the AI model in North America and Europe, with plans to roll it out in other countries such as India, Australia, and Japan.

Reducing packaging waste is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for Amazon’s bottom line. By cutting packaging, the company can reduce costs and improve its overall efficiency. The move towards recyclable paper and cardboard materials in its distribution networks is part of Amazon’s larger goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The shift away from plastic packaging is another step towards sustainability, as plastic is difficult to recycle and poses environmental challenges. Amazon has already replaced plastic delivery bags and air pillows in Europe with paper and cardboard materials.

While Amazon’s efforts to reduce packaging waste are commendable, experts believe that there is still more work to be done across the industry. With increasing regulations on packaging sustainability, companies are under pressure to find innovative solutions to reduce waste and minimize their environmental impact. The use of AI in packaging decisions is a step in the right direction, but the challenge lies in getting the entire supply chain to work together towards a more sustainable future. As Amazon continues to expand its AI model globally, it sets an example for other companies to follow in reducing packaging waste and protecting the environment.
