Rescuers in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul are working tirelessly to evacuate people stranded by floodwaters. At least 90 people have died, with over 130 still missing. The state capital of Porto Alegre is facing severe flooding, with the airport and bus station closed, and main roads blocked. Residents are living without water and electricity, with sewage overflowing in some areas.

The heavy rains, which began last week, have caused rivers to flood, leading to the destruction of roads and bridges and the inundation of entire towns. In Porto Alegre, residents are facing a shortage of basic necessities as shops ration sales of mineral water. Mayor Sebastiao Melo has declared a state of emergency and urged residents to only use water for essential needs. Almost half a million people are without power in the city and outlying towns, as electricity companies have cut off supplies in flooded areas.

The situation in nearby Eldorado do Sul is dire, with streets completely submerged in floodwaters. Rescuers are working nonstop to evacuate residents using smaller boats, as large vessels are unable to reach the city. Al Jazeera’s Latin America editor Lucia Newman reported that it may take days or even weeks for everyone to be safe. A looming cold front is expected to bring more severe rain starting Tuesday night, which could lead to further flooding in the southern part of the state.

Residents like Maria Vitoria Jorge are forced to leave their homes due to the flooding. She shared her experience of leaving her flooded apartment in downtown Porto Alegre and renting a new place with her parents. With limited access to basic amenities like water, many residents are struggling to cope. Adriano Hueck, another resident, is seen trying to salvage medicine from a partially flooded warehouse in the hope that it can still be used in hospitals. The impact of the floods is far-reaching, affecting not just homes but essential services as well.

The Brazilian National Meteorological Institute has warned of more rainfall, potentially exceeding 150 millimeters in some areas. The outlook remains uncertain as the weather continues to pose a threat to the already devastated region. As the rescue and evacuation efforts continue, the focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected residents. The solidarity and resilience of the community are evident as they come together to face this unprecedented natural disaster. With the support of volunteers, rescue crews, and local authorities, efforts are being made to provide relief and assistance to those in need.
