Hundreds of people have lost their lives while attempting to reach Saudi Arabia through Yemen, with at least 38 migrants and refugees, including children, perishing in a boat sinking off the coast of Djibouti. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 22 survivors are being assisted in Djibouti, with six others missing and presumed dead. This incident adds to the nearly 1,000 deaths or disappearances recorded since 2014 along the treacherous “Eastern Route” from Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti through Yemen to other Arab countries.

Despite the dangers, the Eastern Route continues to attract migrants seeking a better life, including a growing number of women and children traveling alone. The IOM noted a significant increase in migrant journeys along this route, with nearly 400,000 movements recorded in 2023. Additionally, another perilous route from the Horn of Africa to South Africa saw 80,000 movements in the same period. In 2023 alone, 698 people, including women and children, died attempting to cross the Gulf of Aden from Djibouti to Yemen in hopes of reaching Saudi Arabia. The IOM provides assistance to over 1.4 million migrants and host communities in the Horn of Africa, Yemen, and Southern Africa.

Migrants and refugees embark on these dangerous journeys in search of employment opportunities, to flee conflict and insecurity, and to escape the impacts of climate change. In addition to the risks of drowning in shipwrecks, they face the threat of starvation, health issues, and exploitation by traffickers. The challenges faced by these individuals highlight the desperate circumstances that drive them to take such risks in pursuit of a better future. The tragic loss of life in the Gulf of Aden underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address the root causes of migration and provide safer alternatives for those seeking to improve their lives.

The international community must work together to address the underlying factors that drive individuals to undertake such perilous journeys, including poverty, conflict, and environmental degradation. Efforts to enhance legal migration pathways, provide economic opportunities, and promote peace and stability in migrants’ countries of origin are essential to reduce the reliance on dangerous routes. Additionally, addressing human trafficking and protecting the rights of migrants and refugees are crucial components of a comprehensive approach to managing migration flows and preventing further loss of life at sea.

Ultimately, the loss of hundreds of lives in the Gulf of Aden serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of irregular migration and the urgent need for collective action to prevent further tragedies. By addressing the root causes of migration, enhancing legal pathways, and ensuring the protection and well-being of migrants and refugees, the international community can work towards creating a safer and more humane migration system that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals on the move.
