Khaya Njumbe, a 15-year-old student from Indiana, is set to become the youngest-known college graduate in the state. He will be receiving his bachelor’s degree in general studies from Indiana University Northwest on May 8 and aspires to become a doctor. Njumbe started studying at IU Northwest when he was only 12 years old, taking online and in-person classes while also participating in extracurricular activities like playing piano and learning Chinese. He had been enrolled at the university while simultaneously taking dual-credit courses at 21st Century Charter High School in Gary, which allows students to earn associate degrees before graduation.

Despite his age, Njumbe successfully completed enough college credits to earn his bachelor’s degree, in addition to three associate degrees in biology, liberal arts, and general studies from Ivy Tech. His professors at IU Northwest, like Sociology and Anthropology professor Jack Bloom, have praised Njumbe as a serious student who produces great work and is a one-of-a-kind student. Njumbe’s age has also captured the attention of those on campus, with him being mistaken for a professor’s grandson and facing skepticism about the authenticity of his school ID while playing basketball at the gymnasium.

Njumbe’s parents, Belinda and David Njumbe, always recognized their son’s gifted abilities. He showed an interest in education from a young age, even reciting words at 13 months old. Belinda Njumbe recalled homeschooling her son and noting how quickly he would grasp advanced material, often completing entire grade levels in just a few months. Njumbe’s passion for learning extended beyond the classroom, as he would spend hours watching educational videos on YouTube and continue his learning journey even when not in school.

Despite the restrictions imposed by labor laws, Njumbe plans to continue pursuing his education in the medical field. His dream is to obtain a doctorate in biomedical engineering from IU Northwest by the age of 22. Social worker Theresa Canady from 21st Century School believes that the sky is the limit for Njumbe, recognizing his determination and potential to achieve his goals. Njumbe’s parents have always supported his education journey and are proud of the dedication and passion he has shown towards learning. With his aspirations set on becoming a doctor, Njumbe’s story continues to inspire those around him to reach for their goals and strive for academic excellence.
