Yoshiko Miwa, at 110 years old, is the oldest living person of Japanese descent in the United States. Despite living through major historical events and personal losses, Miwa chooses to focus on the positive and advises others to do the same. As part of the nisei generation sent to internment camps during World War II, Miwa embodies the Japanese concept of “gaman,” or enduring the unbearable with patience and dignity. She believes that perseverance and tolerance are important qualities to cultivate.

Born in 1914 in California to Japanese immigrants, Yoshiko Miwa faced challenges early in life when her mother and brother passed away. She and her siblings were sent to live at a children’s home founded by their parish. Despite these hardships, Miwa went on to graduate from high school and study business at the University of California, Berkeley. She married Henry Miwa in 1939 and during World War II, the couple and their families were sent to an internment camp before settling in California post-war. Over the years, they faced struggles finding work and eventually started a plant nursery business.

In addition to her positive spirit, Miwa credits her longevity to keeping her mind and body active. She enjoys a variety of hobbies, including walking, reading, flower arranging, Japanese ink art, sewing, and more. Miwa used to walk 4 miles every morning and participated in a 20K walkathon at the age of 76. She also wrote an autobiography detailing her life experiences, travels, and childhood memories. Miwa’s love for noodles is another key aspect of her diet, as she enjoys various types of noodles on a daily basis.

Miwa’s faith has also played a significant role in her life, as she is grateful for the support and teachings she received from the Guadalupe Buddhist Church after her mother’s death. She acknowledges the impact of the church in teaching her valuable lessons in Buddhism, Japanese culture, and responsibility. Additionally, Miwa cherishes the love and support of her family, who have been by her side through the years. She values the warmth and love of her family unit and is grateful for the bond they share.

As she continues to live a fulfilling life in a care facility, Yoshiko Miwa remains in good health and prioritizes activities that bring her joy. She believes that maintaining a positive outlook, staying active, and enjoying the love and support of family and friends are crucial elements of a long and happy life. Miwa’s story serves as a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the importance of focusing on the good in life, even in the face of challenges and adversity.
