Richard Gadd, the star of the Netflix series “Baby Reindeer,” is opening up about the creation process behind the adaptation of his true-life stalker story that was originally a one-man stage play. The limited series has quickly climbed up Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV Shows chart since its release on April 11. Gadd’s harrowing tale revolves around his encounter with a woman he refers to as “Martha” while working as a bartender and struggling comedian, which spiraled into a nightmare of stalking.

In an interview with Variety, Gadd explained the challenge of transforming a 70-minute monologue into seven episodes with multiple characters and plotlines for the television series. Despite the difficulties, Gadd was amazed at the performance of Jessica Gunning, who portrays Martha in the Netflix adaptation. Gunning’s portrayal of Martha captured the essence of the stalker who bombarded Gadd with over 43,000 text messages during the real-life ordeal.

To protect the identities of those involved and for legal reasons, Gadd had to fictionalize the events in “Baby Reindeer” and change the name of his character to Donny Dunn. While the series is a dramatized version of his experiences, Gadd ensured that the emotional core of the story remained true to his real-life encounters. He emphasized the importance of capturing the vulnerability, anger, volatility, and desperation of Martha in Gunning’s performance.

Gadd explained that Gunning’s ability to convey a full range of emotions, particularly in portraying severe mental health issues, added depth and authenticity to the character of Martha. Despite the creative liberties taken in adapting the story for television, Gadd stressed that the emotional truth of the events and the impact on real people were central to the series. He highlighted the balance between artistic expression and legal considerations in depicting the events without causing harm to vulnerable individuals involved.

The adaptation process from stage to screen required significant adjustments, but Gadd was pleased with the final product and the way Gunning brought Martha to life on-screen. He acknowledged the challenges of portraying the complexities of mental health and emotional instability realistically, and praised Gunning for her ability to embody the character authentically. Gadd emphasized that while the series may not depict the exact truth for legal and ethical reasons, it remains emotionally true to his experiences.

All seven episodes of “Baby Reindeer” are now available for streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a gripping and intense portrayal of Gadd’s ordeal with a stalker. The series delves into the psychological impact of stalking and the toll it can take on the victim. Gadd’s story of resilience and survival resonates throughout the series, shedding light on the complexities of mental health, obsession, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction in adapting true-life events for the screen.
