New York Governor Kathy Hochul made a brief appearance at the wake of slain New York City Police Officer Jonathan Diller but appeared to leave shortly after arriving. This incident was captured on video, showing the governor speaking with a man outside the Massapequa Funeral Home before abruptly turning around and leaving. The president of the NYPD’s Sergeants Benevolent Association, Vincent Vallelong, had expressed his disapproval of politicians attending the funeral, accusing them of shedding “crocodile tears” and using the event for photo opportunities. He stated that their presence was a distraction and tarnished the memory of a true hero like Diller.

Former President Trump also attended Diller’s wake, expressing sympathy for the family and calling for a return to law and order. Vallelong criticized city politicians who have supported movements to defund the police and release criminals, yet posted condolences on social media following Diller’s death. Diller, who was 31 years old, was shot during a traffic stop in Queens by a man with a lengthy criminal record. The suspect, Guy Rivera, allegedly shot Diller in the stomach as he tried to get him to exit the vehicle. Rivera then fired on Diller and his partner, injuring Rivera in the process.

Diller, who lived in Massapequa Park with his wife and young son, had served three years with the NYPD before his tragic death. Rivera, who was charged with first degree murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon, was injured during the shootout with the officers. Another man in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, Lindy Jones, was also charged in connection with Diller’s death. The incident sparked outrage and renewed calls for support for law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect their communities.

The governor’s swift exit from the wake of Officer Diller raised eyebrows and drew criticism, especially in light of Vallelong’s statement about politicians using such events for their benefit. The funeral of a fallen police officer should be a time for solemn remembrance and honor, rather than a photo opportunity for elected officials. The tragic death of Diller underscored the dangers that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and highlighted the importance of supporting and protecting those who sacrifice their safety for the safety of others.

In the wake of Officer Diller’s death, the NYPD community mourned the loss of a dedicated and brave officer, while also grappling with the complexities of policing in a challenging environment. Calls for justice and support for law enforcement reverberated in the aftermath of the shooting, with Officer Diller being remembered as a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice. The incident also highlighted the need for unity and respect for the men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day to protect and serve their communities.
