Joseph R. Biden Jr. visited Georgia in late 2020 to support Democratic Senate candidates and celebrate his win in the state. However, his return trip faces a less optimistic atmosphere, as his approval ratings have dropped, and support for him has softened among crucial voter groups. Some Democrats worry about a lack of energy and investment in the state without a crisis or significant event to mobilize voters. Despite this, many believe Georgia could play a pivotal role in the upcoming election, as evidenced by the hosting of a televised debate between Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump in Atlanta.

Historically, Democrats have made gains in Georgia by harnessing demographic shifts and registering new voters. Stacey Abrams’ strong showing in the governor’s race in 2018 and subsequent victories have demonstrated the party’s potential in the state. In 2020, national and global events, such as the pandemic and racial justice protests, intensified in Georgia, leading to high voter turnout and Mr. Biden’s narrow victory over Mr. Trump. Despite efforts by Mr. Trump and his allies to overturn the results, the participation level and Democratic victories were unprecedented.

However, recent legislation passed by Republican state lawmakers in response to Mr. Trump’s claims of election fraud have raised concerns about potential voter suppression, particularly among communities of color. Some Republicans still refuse to acknowledge Mr. Biden’s victory as legitimate. While concerns exist about voter fatigue in the upcoming election, Democrats are looking to drive up enthusiasm with high-profile campaigns and communication of the administration’s achievements. Activists express disillusionment over Mr. Biden’s handling of issues like housing costs and Gaza, but supporters argue that the president’s accomplishments need to be effectively communicated to the public.

As the election season gears up in Georgia, Mr. Biden is looking to focus on achievements like job creation, investments in historically Black colleges, and measures to lower healthcare costs. There is a $14 million advertising blitz planned for battleground states, including Georgia, to mobilize voters and drive home key messages. Despite the current challenges and concerns, there is optimism among some Democrats, who believe that with time and effort, they can continue to rally support and overcome obstacles leading up to the election. The resilience of Georgia voters and the potential for significant events to unfold could once again make the state a key battleground in the upcoming election.
