The Caribbean island of Antigua has been in the spotlight recently due to its growing ties with China, as highlighted in a Newsweek article. The article raised concerns about China’s increasing involvement on the island, including the signing of a deal for a new Chinese “Special Economic Zone” and agreements that would encourage Antiguan officials to study Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s thoughts on governance. The U.S. military’s Southern Command also expressed concerns about China’s expanding presence in Antigua and the Caribbean region.

In response, the chief of staff of the government of Prime Minister Gaston Browne stated that Antigua’s relationship with China is not sinister or dangerous to U.S. interests. He emphasized that China has been a reliable developmental partner to many states around the globe and that Antigua is also a good friend of the United States. Hurst rejected the characterization of the friendship between Antigua and China as being harmful to U.S. interests and emphasized the country’s commitment to peace and cooperation among nations.

The Newsweek article cited leaked documents showing the setup of a Chinese-led “Special Economic Zone” in Antigua, with privileges granted by the government for independent immigration and customs formalities, as well as a dedicated airline, shipping port, and company allowed to issue passports. The article also quoted opposition politicians in Antigua expressing concerns about the extent of Chinese influence and involvement under Browne’s government. The U.S. military’s Southern Command also voiced concerns about these developments in a region traditionally seen as a U.S. sphere of influence.

Hurst’s letter addressing the concerns raised in the Newsweek article was published on Antigua News Room and Browne’s Facebook page. In his response, Browne reiterated Antigua’s commitment to peace and cooperation among nations, stating that they are friends of all and enemies of none. He emphasized that Antigua’s relationship with China is not intended to harm U.S. interests and that they value the partnerships and support received from the United States in various aspects, such as military training and security bolstering.

As the debate continues over the growing ties between Antigua and China, it is clear that the island nation’s relationships with both China and the United States are important and valued. While concerns have been raised about Chinese influence and involvement in the region, Antiguan officials have emphasized their commitment to peace and cooperation among nations and their appreciation for the partnerships with both China and the United States. The situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the need for open dialogue and diplomacy to navigate these relationships effectively.
