In a speech at the Turning Point Action convention in Detroit, former President Donald Trump questioned President Joe Biden’s mental acuity and suggested that Biden should take a cognitive test. Trump also confused the name of the doctor who administered the test to him during his presidency, calling him “Ronny Johnson” instead of Ronny Jackson. Jackson, a Republican congressman from Texas, had served as the White House physician for part of Trump’s presidency and is one of his most vocal defenders on Capitol Hill. Trump, who turned 78 recently, has consistently made questioning Biden’s fitness for a second term a key focus of his campaign.

Critics quickly seized on Trump’s gaffe, with the Biden campaign posting a clip of the moment on social media. The cognitive test that Trump took in 2018 was at his own request and known as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. This exam is designed to detect early signs of memory loss and other mild cognitive impairment. Tasks included remembering a list of words, listening to and repeating random numbers backward, naming words that start with a specific letter, drawing a cube, and describing similarities between two objects. Trump famously recalled the words “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV” during his test.

The Biden campaign has consistently defended the president against criticism of his verbal missteps, citing his lifelong struggle with stuttering and pointing to his accomplishments in office as evidence of his competence. In contrast, a leading psychologist has raised concerns about Trump’s mental capabilities, describing his cognitive decline as another layer of danger on top of his already erratic behavior. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, the mental fitness of both candidates is expected to remain a topic of debate.

As the race for the presidency intensifies, Trump’s latest gaffe while challenging Biden’s cognitive abilities may have inadvertently undermined his own argument and provided ammunition for his critics. Trump’s continued focus on Biden’s mental acuity, while making errors of his own, serves as a reminder of the importance of mental fitness in presidential candidates. The debate over the cognitive abilities of both candidates is likely to continue as the election approaches, with each side attempting to portray their candidate as the most capable leader for the country.
