Disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has officially filed a notice of appeal for his 25-year prison sentence following his fraud trial. His legal team is requesting for him to stay in a Brooklyn prison in order to be closer to his appellate counsel as he works to overturn his sentence. In addition to the 25-year prison sentence, Bankman-Fried has been ordered to pay an estimated $11 billion forfeiture. Despite his guilty verdict, he has vowed to vigorously fight the charges brought against him.

Bankman-Fried’s lawyers have raised concerns about the conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he is currently incarcerated. They have described it as the worst federal jail in the country, citing issues such as lack of access to water and poor electricity. They have also highlighted Bankman-Fried’s struggles to find food that aligns with his vegan diet in prison. Additionally, his diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder has been raised as a vulnerability in prison due to potential misunderstandings with inmates and guards.

Prior to sentencing, Bankman-Fried’s defense had emphasized his intentions to dedicate his post-prison life to charitable works and helping others, in line with his commitment to effective altruism. They argued that he never intended to harm anyone and should be given a chance to make amends. Meanwhile, one of his co-conspirators, former FTX CEO Ryan Salame, will be facing legal punishment for his role in the crypto scandal when he is sentenced on May 28. Salame had pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business.

The appeal process for Sam Bankman-Fried has formally begun, with his legal team taking the necessary steps to challenge his 25-year prison sentence. The process is expected to be lengthy and complex as they work to overturn the verdict against him. It remains unclear when Bankman-Fried will next appear in court as the legal proceedings continue. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains committed to fighting the charges brought against him and seeking a resolution to his case. The developments in his appeal and the sentencing of his co-conspirators will likely shape the future of the FTX scandal and its aftermath.
