Iran reportedly finalized a deal with Russia for Su-35 Flanker-E fighter jets, although the Iranian government publicly disputed rumors of an imminent delivery. However, there is speculation that Iran will eventually receive these Russian aircraft, which are expected to be compared in battle against American F-16 Fighting Falcons used by Ukraine’s armed forces. The Su-35s have already been deployed in attacks during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the differences between the two aircraft.

Both the F-16 and the Su-35 are combat multi-role fighters with different capabilities. The F-16 has a top speed of Mach 2, while the Su-35 is said to be capable of reaching Mach 2.25. The Su-35 is powered by two jet engines, providing more thrust and redundancy, while the F-16 is lighter with a single engine. The Russian jet is known for its greater firepower and survivability, as well as advanced features such as thrust-vectoring engines, a robust radar system, and countermeasures against enemy radar. On the other hand, the F-16 boasts improved visibility with a bubble canopy and side-mounted control stick for better control and maneuvering.

In terms of performance, the F-16 is lighter and more agile than the Su-35, allowing it to take off from shorter runways. However, the Su-35 is designed for longer missions with a greater range and payload capacity. Retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Dan Hampton expressed doubts about the Su-35, calling the F-16 more durable and citing its advanced radar systems as a crucial advantage. Hampton highlighted the Su-35’s larger wingspan and size, which he believes contribute to its limitations as a combat aircraft.

The ongoing debate over the capabilities of the Su-35 and the F-16 underscores the complex dynamics of modern military conflicts. As Iran prepares to potentially receive Su-35 fighter jets, the world will be watching closely to see how these Russian aircraft perform in combat situations. The comparison between these two fighter jets highlights the strategic choices and trade-offs that countries must consider when selecting their military assets. Ultimately, the outcome of these comparisons will shape the future of military technology and influence the decisions of nations in their defense strategies.
