The United Arab Emirates recently faced severe flooding due to the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the desert state. The flooding caused disruptions to airlines, banks, city transport, and most of the services in Dubai and other emirates. Residents found themselves stranded due to flooded roads, lack of running water, and loss of electricity. Despite warnings to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas, some residents ventured out to buy groceries by using surfboards, jet skis, and even rafts. While the weather disaster brought hardships to many, it also brought communities together as neighbors helped each other and donated essentials to those in need.

Some parts of the UAE received over 100 mm of rain, a 75-year record, prompting the government to issue a red warning and close offices, schools, and banks. The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Authority advised residents to stay home and park vehicles in elevated spots. Despite the efforts, hundreds of cars were abandoned on the highways, and the city’s metro stations became impromptu shelters for stranded individuals. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, but some areas remain submerged, making it challenging for maintenance crews to access the affected areas.

Dubai’s airport was severely affected by the heavy rains, causing flight cancellations and chaos among travelers. Passengers were urged not to come to the airport unless necessary, and check-ins were suspended until further notice. Some stranded passengers faced difficulties getting home, with airport staff directing them to alternative transportation that was unavailable. Overseas travelers, trying to return to Dubai after the Eid holiday, also faced challenges with flight cancellations and long wait times on customer service lines.

Residents affected by the floods shared their experiences of being stranded and facing property damage due to the rising waters. The UAE Ministry of Interior announced the end of weather fluctuations and efforts to restore normalcy in the affected areas. Despite the challenges faced by residents and businesses, some found solidarity and strength in their communities, with neighbors coming together to support each other during the crisis. While the cleanup and recovery efforts continue, the UAE government is striving to ensure a full recovery and return to normal life.

For some travelers, being stranded in other countries due to flight cancellations turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Fanny Balleuil, a French resident, found herself stuck in Bahrain after her flight to Dubai was canceled. Her housemates informed her that her room was flooded, making it uninhabitable until maintenance workers could pump out the water. Despite the inconvenience, she found Bahrain to be a pleasant experience and an opportunity to explore a new country. Overall, the UAE continues to grapple with the aftermath of the unprecedented rainfall, with efforts underway to restore order and help those affected by the floods.
