The Justice Department has agreed to pay $138.7 million to settle 139 claims of abuse by former U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor Lawrence G. Nassar. These claims alleged that Nassar sexually assaulted over 150 women and girls, including top gymnasts like Simone Biles and Aly Raisman. The settlement marks the conclusion of a long fight by the victims to seek justice and hold accountable those who failed to protect them. While the monetary compensation is seen as a step towards healing, it is acknowledged that no amount of money can fully undo the trauma suffered by the victims.

Lawyers representing the young women involved in the settlement praised the agreement but also criticized the delay in fully investigating Nassar’s crimes. They emphasized that the goal was to ensure such abuses never happen again. The specifics of the payouts have been determined, with individual amounts varying based on the nature of the abuse claims, averaging around $1 million per woman or girl. Despite the financial compensation, many victims still struggle with the emotional impact of the abuse and the lack of accountability from institutions like the F.B.I.

Nassar is currently serving a 60-year sentence in federal prison after being convicted of sexually abusing numerous women and girls. The settlement with the Justice Department follows years of legal battles and public outcry over the mishandling of reports of abuse by Nassar. Victims like Alexis Hazen, who reported the abuse in 2016, expressed a mix of relief and disappointment at the resolution. The settlement has brought closure to some victims, but questions remain about the failures within the F.B.I. and other organizations that allowed Nassar’s abuse to continue unchecked.

The settlement with the Justice Department comes after revelations that senior F.B.I. officials did not adequately respond to complaints about Nassar’s abuse when they were first reported by U.S. national team athletes in 2015. A report by the Justice Department’s inspector general highlighted the missteps and errors made by F.B.I. officials in handling the allegations against Nassar. The lack of urgency and proper investigative procedures allowed Nassar to continue abusing girls and women for years before he was finally brought to justice.

The settlement with the Justice Department is part of a series of similar agreements reached in cases involving victims of mass shootings. Families of victims from incidents such as the church shooting in Texas in 2017 and the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018 have also received compensation from the Justice Department. These settlements aim to provide some support and acknowledgment to the victims and their families as they continue to heal from the trauma of these tragic events. The agreement with Nassar’s victims represents a significant step towards accountability and justice, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of timely and thorough investigations into allegations of abuse to prevent future harm.
