Microsoft has recently made a significant AI-related investment of $1.5 billion in G42, an AI holding company based in the United Arab Emirates. This move demonstrates Microsoft’s strategic focus on AI and highlights the growing credibility of the Middle East tech ecosystem. Founded in 2018, G42 has a presence in various industries such as healthcare, oil and gas, and finance, and has been described as playing a key role in Abu Dhabi’s digital transformation with the government’s support. However, G42 has faced scrutiny due to ties with China, and has announced plans to reduce its presence in the country.

The deal between Microsoft and G42 is seen as a way to counter China’s influence in the technological sphere in the Gulf region and beyond. As part of the agreement, G42 will stop using telecom equipment from Chinese tech giant Huawei. Microsoft emphasized the importance of ensuring the secure, trusted, and responsible development and deployment of AI, backed by a binding agreement with the U.S. and UAE governments. Microsoft will hold a minority stake in G42 and Microsoft President Brad Smith will join the board as part of the investment.

G42 will leverage Microsoft Azure to run its AI applications and services, and partner to deliver advanced AI solutions to global public sector clients and large enterprises. The two companies will also support a $1 billion fund for AI developers in the UAE and broader region. This investment adds to Microsoft’s other significant AI bets, such as the $13 billion investment in OpenAI and its recent acquisition of key executives from Inflection.ai. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s visit to the UAE earlier this month further highlights the potential for collaboration in the AI industry.

Overall, Microsoft’s investment in G42 reflects its commitment to advancing AI technologies and leveraging strategic partnerships to drive innovation in the Middle East tech ecosystem. The deal is part of a larger effort by Microsoft to strengthen its position in the AI race, while also addressing concerns about the responsible and ethical use of AI. By collaborating with G42 and supporting AI development in the region, Microsoft aims to contribute to the growth and transformation of key industries, while ensuring that AI technologies are developed and deployed in a secure and trusted manner.
