The Los Angeles collections agency owner, John Dunton, allegedly confessed to a private detective, Paul Barresi, that OJ Simpson had hired goons from the Gambino mob family to kill his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. Dunton claims he stayed silent for years out of fear of retaliation from the Mafia but decided to speak out recently. He stated that Simpson ordered the hit on his spouse and was present on the day of the murders. Simpson was ultimately acquitted of the murders of Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994.
Dunton, now 62, provided Barresi with information suggesting that he had learned about Simpson’s whereabouts on the night of the murders from someone in his circle. Although Dunton was vague about the identity of the informant, he was adamant that the killings were a mob hit orchestrated by Simpson. He claimed that the four individuals who carried out the murders were members of the Gambino family and acted under Simpson’s direction. Dunton insisted that Simpson was aware of the hit and wanted to watch it happen, although his exact involvement remains unclear.
When contacted for comments, Dunton declined to speak and directed inquiries to Barresi. Barresi explained that he had reached out to Dunton 30 years ago regarding the case but only recently convinced him to share his story. Dunton was quoted as saying, “The four guys that came, they were members of the Gambino family. They were involved in all kinds of stuff. You know what the mob does. The bottom line is everything was done with OJ’s direction. That’s what happened.”
Dunton maintained that he had informed the police about what he knew at the time of the murders but demanded to remain anonymous. However, he was ultimately compelled to testify by a judge and spent time in jail for contempt of court. Despite facing threats from a Gambino operative, Dunton refused to disclose the identity of the gangster who had threatened him as the individual is still alive. His former attorney, Robert Rentzer, corroborated Dunton’s fears and expressed uncertainty about why Dunton was hesitant to testify about the mob hit.
Barresi admitted that he had no knowledge of how the mobsters discovered Dunton’s alleged involvement in the case. Dunton had previously provided information to Time magazine that suggested he knew individuals who may have been present at Nicole Brown Simpson’s condo on the night she was killed. Additionally, he had a criminal history, having been convicted of forgery multiple times. Despite doubts about Dunton’s credibility, his claim that Simpson was connected to the mob hit has generated renewed interest in the infamous case.
