Sean “Diddy” Combs returned his key to New York City after Mayor Eric Adams requested it in response to a video showing him attacking R&B singer Cassie. The mayor’s office stated that Combs returned the key after receiving letters from Adams rescinding the key and condemning the attack. Adams expressed solidarity with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in his letter. The city received the key on June 10, following the request.

Combs’ career has faced numerous accusations of sexual abuse, along with a federal criminal sex-trafficking investigation that resulted in raids on his mansions. In May, CNN aired security footage of Combs attacking Cassie in a hotel hallway in Los Angeles in 2016. Combs later apologized for his actions, calling them “inexcusable.” Cassie, also known as Cassandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit against Combs last year, which was settled shortly after being filed, sparking increased scrutiny on Combs.

Last year, Adams awarded Combs with the key to the city at a ceremony coinciding with the release of a new album. However, Howard University recently rescinded an honorary degree awarded to Combs and terminated a scholarship program in his name following the release of the video involving Cassie. Combs, known for founding Bad Boy Records, has been a prominent figure in the hip-hop industry and has built a successful business empire from his musical success over the last three decades.

Despite the controversy surrounding Combs, he is considered one of the most influential hip-hop producers and executives in recent history. His talents in music and business have led to his success in both industries, despite the setbacks he has faced throughout his career. An email sent to a representative listed online for Combs was not immediately returned, indicating that he may not have further comment on the situation or the return of the key to the city.
