Russia announced today, Monday, that its forces had thwarted a major Ukrainian attack in five sectors along the front in the Donetsk region, killing hundreds of soldiers.
It is still not clear whether the aforementioned attack is the beginning of a Ukrainian counterattack that Kiev has pledged months ago to launch to restore the territories controlled by Russian forces since the war that began in February 2022.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine had launched an offensive using six mechanized and two tank battalions in southern Donetsk.
For his part, the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Sersky, said that his country’s forces continue to advance near the city of Bakhmut, which the two sides have been fighting over for a long time, in northern Donetsk, but he did not make any comments about the counterattack.
