Long-time NYPD Detective James Byrne, who served as a trusted advisor to the department’s top cop, is leaving the Finest to join the US Secret Service. Commissioner Edward A. Caban commended Byrne for his over two decades of service to the NYPD and the people of New York City. Byrne was praised for his role as a trusted communications advisor, a liaison to the press, and his work as chief speechwriter on the Executive Communications Team.

Byrne, a nearly 23-year-veteran, has served in various roles within the NYPD, including in the office of the first deputy commissioner, the deputy commissioner of public information, the chief of department, and the community affairs bureau. Commissioner Caban expressed his gratitude for Byrne’s many contributions to the NYPD and wished him all the best in his new role with the United States Secret Service. Byrne will be greatly missed as an integral member of the commissioner’s staff.

In his new role with the US Secret Service, Byrne will head up a new public affairs unit based in New York City. He started his service with the NYPD in 2001, patrolling Bedford-Stuyvesant’s 81st Precinct, mostly on the overnight shift. Two months into his tenure, Byrne was a first responder at Ground Zero following the September 11 terror attacks. Just five months ago, he achieved a personal milestone by attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in person for the first time, accompanied by his wife and young sons, and expressing gratitude to all the first responders who ensured it was a safe day for all.

Throughout his career, James Byrne has been a dedicated and trusted member of the NYPD, serving in various roles and demonstrating his commitment to public service. His work has been recognized by Commissioner Caban and others within the department, who have praised his leadership, communication skills, and reliability. As Byrne moves on to the US Secret Service, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence that will be remembered by his colleagues and the people of New York City.

Byrne’s departure marks the end of an era within the NYPD, as he transitions to a new chapter in his career with the US Secret Service. The department will feel his absence as he takes on the challenge of his new role in public affairs with the federal agency. Despite the bittersweet nature of his departure, Commissioner Caban and the NYPD as a whole are supportive of Byrne’s decision and wish him success in his future endeavors.

As Byrne embarks on this new journey with the US Secret Service, he carries with him the experience, knowledge, and dedication that he has honed over his many years of service with the NYPD. His leadership and communication skills will undoubtedly serve him well in his new role, as he continues to uphold the values of public service and protect the citizens of the United States. The NYPD and the people of New York City express their gratitude to James Byrne for his unwavering dedication and wish him the best of luck in his new position with the US Secret Service.
