Yesterday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to strengthen his country’s defense capabilities within five years, after the government updated the three major national security documents in late 2022.
“We will fully enhance our country’s defense capabilities over the next five years,” Kishida said, in a speech at the graduation ceremony of the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, according to the Japanese Jiji Press news agency. “This task will not be completed until after implementing the measures listed in the three documents,” Kishida added.
“We came up with a series of necessary measures to enhance Japan’s defense strength through a very realistic simulation,” Kishida said.
Kishida denounced the Russian war on Ukraine, and said that Japan will show its determination to protect the international order at the upcoming summit of the Group of Seven in Hiroshima.
