Greek intelligence chief resigns over espionage scandal

The Greek Prime Minister’s Office announced that the director of Greek intelligence, Panagiotis Kontolio, resigned yesterday amid an alleged spying scandal against a politician and journalist by the illegal information program Predator.

“Director of National Intelligence Panagiotis Kontolione submitted his resignation, which was accepted by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis,” a statement said.

The resignation of Kontolio, who was appointed in August 2019, comes a week after it was revealed an attempt to use the program to monitor the leader of the opposition Greek Socialist Party.

It also comes hours after Gregory Demetriades, Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Office and his nephew, resigned.
