The Ethiopian government said yesterday that it had appointed a senior official in the Tigray People’s Liberation Front as head of the interim government in the region, after a peace agreement that ended a two-year conflict. This announcement comes just one day after parliament removed the Tigray People’s Liberation Front from the official list of terrorist organizations, in a move it said would contribute to strengthening the peace agreement concluded in November 2022. The office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed tweeted, “Prime Minister Abyei appointed Ahmed Getachew Reda as president.” for the Interim Administration of the Tigray Region. The formation of a transitional government for this region located in the far north of Ethiopia and the removal of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front from the list of terrorist organizations were among the main provisions of the peace agreement signed in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa.
