Dealing with a terminal illness like dementia is a heartbreaking experience as it represents a steady decline towards an inevitable end. It is easy to become consumed by feelings of loss and sadness, but finding moments of joy, humor, or weirdness can be crucial for survival during this time. These moments can sometimes reveal a sacred bond and form of communication that transcends the limitations of the illness, allowing loved ones to connect on a deeper level.

Dementia is a degenerative disease that slowly erodes the brain, starting with inhibitions and control mechanisms before progressing to areas responsible for memory and language. This gradual process eventually reaches the brainstem, impairing even basic functions like chewing, swallowing, and breathing. The agonizingly slow yet seemingly rapid progression of the disease can be difficult to witness, as the person affected loses more and more of themselves over time.

In March 2015, the author’s father passed away from dementia when the author was 18 years old. Before his passing, the author and their sisters took him home for a day trip to the beach, where they enjoyed moments with him despite his declining health. On the way back, the author played their father’s favorite album, Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” in the car. To their surprise, he began humming and then singing along to the music, displaying a moment of clarity and joy that had been rare in recent months.

Despite the hardships of watching a loved one deteriorate from dementia, there are still opportunities for connection and shared happiness. Music, in particular, can trigger memories and emotions that transcend the limitations of the illness, allowing moments of joy and connection to shine through. These moments become treasures to hold onto amidst the overwhelming sorrow and challenges of watching a loved one slip away.

Finding ways to celebrate these small moments of joy, humor, or connection can be a lifeline during the difficult journey of caring for a loved one with dementia. Though the disease slowly strips away memories and functions, the bonds of love and connection can still shine through in unexpected ways.
