The Biden administration is putting together a new aid package for Ukraine valued at approximately $1 billion, pending Senate approval of a foreign aid funding bill. This package is expected to include long-range ATACMS missile systems, which will be sent to Ukraine for the first time. Ukrainian officials have been requesting these missiles to target deeper behind Russian lines, while US officials have been hesitant due to concerns about supplies and provoking Moscow. In the fall of last year, the US provided Ukraine with the midrange variant of the ATACMS system, with the longer-range version capable of reaching up to 190 miles.
In addition to the long-range missiles, the aid package is also expected to include much-needed munitions for Ukraine, such as air defense and artillery ammunition, Bradley fighting vehicles, and demolition weaponry. The legislation passed by the House and soon to be approved by the Senate mandates the transfer of the longer-range ATACMS “as soon as practicable,” unless it is determined to be detrimental to US national security interests. This military aid will be sourced from US stockpiles through presidential drawdown authority, marking the first PDA package for Ukraine since March and significantly larger than the previous package worth around $300 million.
A White House official declined to comment on the specifics of the aid package but stated that the US is prepared to swiftly provide military aid to Ukraine to address their urgent battlefield and air defense needs once the funding is approved by the Senate and signed into law. US European Command is already working to process the weaponry so that it can be efficiently transferred to Ukraine once approval is secured. Pentagon officials have indicated that the aid can begin to be transferred within a week or two of the funding being passed, ensuring a quick response to Ukraine’s needs.
