Russia is taking advantage of the battlefield in Ukraine due to the withholding of U.S. military aid by Congress, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Ukraine has heavily relied on weapons and ammunition provided by the U.S. and other allies while fighting off Russian forces for over two years. Despite some notable successes, Russia has recently gained the upper hand, putting Kyiv in a difficult position. While some European allies have increased aid to Ukraine, the stalling of U.S. military assistance has allowed Russia to make gains.

The situation on the ground in Ukraine has become dire, with Ukrainian forces facing shortages in equipment and supplies, particularly in the eastern part of the country. The lack of aid from the U.S. has weakened Ukraine’s ability to repel Russian offensives, according to the Institute for the Study of War. The think tank warns that Russia is taking advantage of Ukrainian vulnerabilities resulting from the lack of U.S. assistance and making tactical gains. If U.S. aid continues to be withheld, future Russian assaults could lead to more threatening advances.

The Biden administration has been urging Congress to pass a National security supplemental request to provide aid to Ukraine. However, the aid package, which includes $60 billion for Ukraine, has been stalled in the House due to opposition from some Republican lawmakers. In response to recent events, including an attack on Israel by Iran, plans are being made to break the aid package into separate bills for individual votes. This includes a standalone vote on aid to Ukraine and Israel, although the White House has expressed opposition to a separate bill for Israel.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has drawn parallels between support for Ukraine and support for Israel in the face of threats. He highlighted the lack of support from international partners in intercepting drones and missiles, comparing the situation in Ukraine to recent events in the Middle East. Zelensky emphasized the need to defeat terrorism comprehensively and everywhere, calling for consistent support from allies in all regions. The lack of assistance from the U.S. and others has left Ukraine vulnerable to Russian aggression.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine underscores the importance of timely and sufficient military aid to support the country’s defense against Russian forces. The delay in providing assistance has allowed Russia to make strategic gains on the battlefield, putting Ukraine at a disadvantage. The Biden administration and Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized the urgent need for aid to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Moving forward, it is crucial for Congress to act swiftly to approve the necessary funding to support Ukraine and strengthen its defense capabilities. Failure to do so could have serious repercussions not only for Ukraine but also for regional stability and international security.
