A Florida woman, Leslie Gehret, was sentenced to over 23 years in prison for a DUI crash that killed a father and son last summer. She pleaded no contest to two counts of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, driving with a suspended license, and causing serious bodily injury or death. Following a plea deal, Gehret was sentenced to 280 months in prison and 12 months of probation. The crash occurred in July 2023, killing Shane Lloyd and his son Jakob Lloyd as they were traveling to a college orientation at the University of Central Florida.

After completing her prison sentence, Gehret will have to complete 50 hours of community service, attend DUI school, and have her driver’s license permanently suspended. The crash took place in Orlando when Gehret ran a red light and collided with the Lloyd’s car, causing it to flip over multiple times. Shane Lloyd died at the scene, while Jakob Lloyd passed away from his injuries at a hospital.

The investigation found that Gehret was driving at 94 mph at the time of impact, and she was under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit even 5 hours after the crash. Additionally, she was driving with a suspended license while on probation for a previous DUI arrest. Gehret, originally from New Rochelle, New York, had a history of DUI arrests, including three over the past decade. She had also been involved in a previous wreck that resulted in a lawsuit for damages and a permanent injury to another individual.

Jakob Lloyd, who was studying forensic chemistry at UCF at the time of his death, was on his way to start classes in the fall. Gehret’s reckless actions not only resulted in the loss of two lives but also caused significant emotional and physical harm to the victims and their families. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions behind the wheel. The Lloyd family and the community mourn the loss of Shane and Jakob Lloyd while seeking justice for their tragic deaths.
